Leadership in Business - The Difference

As you know, businesses revolve around people. The level of success attained by any organization regardless of size or structure, is dependent upon the individuals that are tasked with driving that company forward.

Some time ago, I was sitting in the office of the president of a large company, during our conversation one of his staff came to the door of his office, politely knocked and proceeded to ask a question that she felt was important, all the while offering apologies for the interruption. The response she received from the company president, in response to her interruption, was to say the least shocking, counterproductive and extremely unprofessional. He turned to me and stated, “look what I have to put up with.” I was not surprised then, when he informed me that the company employee attrition rate was extremely high.

True leaders know that effective communication skills are one of the keys to achieving the desired results. Successful leaders are knowledgeable, and are able of effectively articulating to their teams the objectives desired. Leaders are achievers and in most instances instinctively know what level of influence is essential realizing their goals and aspirations.

Communication is a relatively broad term; a leader and communicator is or should be skilled at dealing with a diverse assortment of challenges, including conflict. Leaders are aware of what triggers conflict and should be aware of the steps necessary to impact an outcome. Leaders are required to transcend a situation, to be sentient and able to respond, in many scenarios before anyone else is even aware of forthcoming obstacle or difficulty.

The art of communication, although likely one of the most important talents that a leader can possess, is usually taken for granted. You cannot lead a team if you can’t communicate effectively with those people on your team. Just because someone holds a position, doesn’t make them a great leader. A title should not the motivation for someone to follow you! Ask yourself this question: Why do people follow me? Is it because they have to, or because they want to.

Remember this; you cannot lead anyone, until you can first lead yourself!

You already have the talent and ability to be an effective and powerful communicator! You have been given the ability to develop your leadership skills! What are you going to do with these phenomenal and extraordinary faculties that you have been gifted with? You do have a choice, you can develop them or ignore them, and allow them to deteriorate.

I am often asked the question, “where do I start?” Here is the answer: You have the ability to accept any thought or idea that enters your subconscious mind. What are you permitting to enter? Make a decision to manage what you accept. The second part of the answer is it that you are focusing on? Whatever you are focusing on will have a dramatic influence on your outcome as a leader.

Great communicators are great leaders, it therefore stands to reason that they are easily recognizable to those around them, as successful. People want to follow and emulate someone who is successful.

How do you live???

Do you have any idea what I am referring to in the title? On numerous occasions, while conducting seminars, I have asked this very question. Most people have no idea what I mean when I ask this, and I won’t keep you waiting any longer. I am however, going to answer this question with another question:

Do you live from the inside out or from the outside in?

Do you have any idea what I am talking about yet? I am talking about what you allow to control your thoughts, and therefore you. What information do you allow in? Keep in mind, that whatever we allow into our conscious mind, unchecked, is impressed upon the subconscious mind and will begin to manifest in our lives.

It really is irrelevant what the source of this information is. Think about that for a moment, what is controlling you now? What does your future hold? Ensure that you are making the decisions in your life, and you REFUSE to be influenced by negative outside sources of any kind.

You will listen to people, teachers, parents and advisors, just be sure that the people to whom you are listening are successful in that area of their lives, as you will start to experience similar results.

Here are just some of the sources that we listen to, and or some of the activities that we engage in.

Derogatory and or Scandalous conversations with one or more individuals.

Becoming involved with a source of constant negativity.

Unproductive conversations (gossip, sarcasm, rumors etc.)

Listening to friends and family that are naysayers or detractors.

Always seeking, and or associating with people that are always seeking and expecting the worst.

Uncritically allowing outside information into our conscious mind (and therefore unconscious mind as well), and permitting it to impact our decisions and our lives.

Making excuses.

Blaming someone or something else. (You either take responsibility for everything, or you are a victim)

Listening/watching/reading media sources.

Permitting our paradigms to continue to control us. (paradigms will be discussed at another time)

Fear. (of failure, of what other may think, of something new etc.)

Now, let’s discuss what we should be focusing on in order to ensure that we are headed in the right direction, the direction of our goals, aspirations and dreams.

Have a goal, a destination. (DO NOT worry about the “HOW”)

Focus! Concentrate on one thing to the exclusion of all outside distractions.

Understand that we need to believe in ourselves and that we can accomplish anything that we truly desire. Believe in YOU!

Make an irrevocable decision to achieve your goal. (Never be held back by indecision)

Create the image of what you desire. (Your goals) (Paul Martinelli says: “Hold Your Image”)

Become emotionally involved with this image.

Develop belief that your goal will come to fruition.

Know that there is no such thing as fear. (it is a paradigm)

Invoke the Law of Action.

Be ready, and know that you deserve abundance and prosperity.

Only pay attention to those of like mind and who also want to achieve Greatness!

KNOW that YOU can accomplish anything you want to!

Get yourself a good Coach today!

The great teacher Les Brown has been quoted as follows, “The two greatest days in a person’s life are, the day that they are born, and the day that they find out why.” What he is saying is, you will find your calling and when you do, trust me on this, it will be absolutely phenomenal. I don’t believe that there are words to describe the feeling. It you haven’t had this experience, keep at it and it will happen. Persistence is one of the rules of success. Be the very best at what you are doing today, where you are today, and you will start to see a shift, your dreams will begin to become reality.

What or whom are you listening to? What are you Reading? What are you Watching? Is the information that you are receiving from these sources constructive? Is this information going to move you in the direction of your image or goal? If the answer is yes, great! If the answer is no, make the changes and watch what begins to happen.

You can even “Create Your Own Economy.”

I urge you to make an irrevocable decision, right now, to be extremely critical of what you allow in!

What is Success?

We hear a great deal about being successful, we’re told that we should be successful from a early age, we’re conditioned as to what success might or should be and finally most of us seek success our entire lives. So, what is the definition of success?

Earl Nightingale defined success as “The Progressive Realization of a Worthy Ideal.” Let’s take a moment to understand this a little bit better. After all, understanding success is one of the keys to actually achieving it.

1. Progressive – We are always (or should be) developing, growing and improving. There is never a time when we “have arrived.” We should always be striving for more and moving forward, the moment that we stop growing, we start going in the opposite direction. “Create or Disintegrate” as Bob Proctor likes to say.

2. Realization – As we develop and grow we gain a new understanding and an increased awareness. As we progress, we begin to expand our knowledge, understanding and consciousness and as a result attainment or achievement of our goals appears to be much simpler than we originally believed possible. Fulfillment.

3. Worthy – This is something that you want. A goal is that which you desire more than anything else. There is no inspiration in needs, ensure your goal is inspirational and that it is of benefit to not only yourself, but also those around you.

4. Ideal – An ideal is an idea that you fell in love with. This is your goal, your destination and you will need to have a clear goal in order to reach your destination. Napoleon Hill makes mention that your goal must become a near obsession and a burning desire. Keep in mind, without a goal (your ideal) you cannot achieve what it is that you truly desire. You must have a destination!

Did you know that only around 5% percent of people will end up be truly successful by the time they reach retirement age? This is astounding! Why do so many people fail? Conformity! They conform to the wrong percentage group. They conform to the 95%, and what is the other reason, because they don’t know where they are going. They have no predetermined goal!

Earl Nightingale mentions that, a true success is someone who is doing exactly what they want to do, deliberately, and is therefore realizing a worthy predetermined ideal.

Do you have a predetermined goal? Do you know where you are going? If you do not, you may want to become a Goal Achiever. Start today.
